Bergdorf Goodman - Forty Four EdT (1944)
This is one of those blends I'm having a hard time breaking down—no doubt my own limitation. Aldehydic for sure, a little floral, a little amber, a wee bit of leather, some oakmoss and perhaps even a dash of civet…I can't find any notes anywhere, and I've spent half the day competing with Dr. T.'s Dioressence, which complicates matters (albeit delightfully). Anyway, a fine if not earth-shattering feminine.
Perfume Intelligence says it was released c.1925, but that's demonstrably incorrect. The November 23 1944 issue of the Hartford Courant alerted early Christmas shoppers, "the Bergdorf-Goodman colognes, toilet water, and perfumes, 'Number Nine' and 'Number Twenty-nine,' as well as the new 'Number Forty-four' perfume, would make luxurious gifts." And a fragrance ad in the February 28 1945 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer* proclaims, "Newest and most precious is Number Forty-Four, warm, luscious, lasting, instantly beloved." (*Bergdorf Goodman perfumes were not sold exclusively in Bergdorf Goodman stores.) The last ad I could find for it was in 1956.
It seems likely that Forty Four was named after the year of release. Wikipedia implies that Number Nine was either named for the song, "Love Potion No. 9," or the song was named for it. The latter is almost certainly inaccurate; as for the former, Number Nine was launched alongside Number Twenty Nine in December 1942—the apparent debut of Bergdorf Perfumes & Colognes. (Prior to that, Bergdorf had been the first retailer to carry Prince Matchabelli. Go figure.)
According to Bergdorf's ad copy, "When France fell, one of its finest perfumers escaped to this country with a priceless cache of rare essences. Here, the New York fashion house of Bergdorf-Goodman commissioned him to create for their exclusive use the now celebrated 'Number Nine' perfume, a musk-base fragrance, extraordinarily sweet, warm and lasting. Its success brought the 'Number Nine' Cologne, and then the rich, vibrant 'Number Twenty-Nine,' a happy blend of sandalwood, flowers and fascination."
A 1956 newspaper item claimed Bergdorf employee Sally Freed had just come up with it and named it after Old No. 9, the coal mine where her father worked. Somebody was pulling someone's leg with that one.
Bergdorf Goodman's "newest and lightest" fragrance, Nandi, was launched for Christmas 1955, following a sari-inspired dress shown in the fall named for "Nandi, the Hindu goddess of joy." Alas, while the Sanskrit word "nandi" does translate as "joy," Nandi the deity is a divine bull, the steed and guardian of Shiva. I just scored a cheap bottle of Nandi Triple Cologne, so we'll see how joyful and/or bullish it is.
A couple of other Bergdorf fragrances from 1964 were named for NYC telephone exchanges: PLaza 3 and BUtterfield 8.

I know very little. BN only has one in the directory: Number Nine. (You know I’ll have to get that one.) I have BG Violet Cologne, and I’ve seen a few more, including Nandi, Plaza 3, and Butterfield 8.
Smelling notes to come: I haven’t actually doused yet.
OK: see above.

Not just CK’s best, but one of the best of the era.
I hope you and your loved ones are well.
I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.

Chanel no. 5 EDC tonight.
"It's not what you look like when you're doing what you're doing; it's what you're doing when you're doing what you look like you're doing."
Sampling for the first time Gianfranco Ferre for Men. Compared to some of the previous samplings, this one seems much more pleasant throughout. Green and citruses in the opening. Florals, spices, herbs in the mid. Oakmoss and woods in the base.

The complete original 1949 vintage Avon for Men grooming experience
Including:
-Brushless shave cream (still usable)
-Liquid deodorant (still works)
-Aftershave lotion
-body talc
-Avon for Men cologne
All scented like glorious mid-century fougère with lavender, geranium, sandalwood, oakmoss, and musk (plus a bit of camphor in the A/S). This was super difficult to track down and assemble. Took me all of 2 years.
