I'm still crushing on it. I feel like I need to smell someone else wearing it to understand why people around me don't like it more. I'll try to experiment on the little guy.

    Lenthéric - Adam’s Rib (c.1954)

Per Grace Hummel: a spicy aldehydic floral fougere perfume with dominant jasmine and rose notes.

    Top: aldehydes, bergamot, lavender
    Heart: carnation, jasmine, rose, honey
Base: oakmoss, cedar, ambergris, patchouli, fern, oakmoss, sandalwood, musk, tonka, labdanum

Presumably inspired by the 1949 Tracy-Hepburn film. My own smelling notes to follow.

    ___

Well, between my busy work day and my wife being drenched in vintage Amouage Dia EDT, my smelling notes will have to be cursory. In a nutshell, the description above seems accurate, and while Adam's Rib smells good, it's not some long-lost work of genius that flew inexplicably under the radar. If you like this sort of thing, you'll probably like this specific thing—I'm sure I'll wear it again at some point—but it's only a must-have for collectors. Unisex if you're a guy unafraid of not-too-florid florals. Nice drydown, but not a performance monster in the Bouquet concentration.

The movie is better, though on this nominal theme, I'd give the edge to All About Eve.

Who’s the little guy, George? Something tells me he wouldn’t be into it. We got a new pup a few weeks ago, a Catahoula mix with a crazy good sniffer. He’ll inevitably find whatever spot on my arm I sprayed, sniff closely, then proceed to sneeze and rub his face all over the floor. He acts like Nicolas Cage jammed one of those green VX balls in his mouth a la The Rock. My last dog couldn’t sniff out a treat in the grass 5ft away.

I've never tried perfume on George the pug. His skin has a persistent "Fritos" note that I'm afraid would be a problem.

The little guy is the Titou, naturally, who is actually a high school sophomore at the moment - not as little as before, but still the little guy.

    Avon Wild Country (1967)

Today I have a special treat. An original deepest of deep vintage, 1967 Wild Country cologne 6oz from an original faux-saddlebag grooming kit (will show that later), full nitromusk and sandalwood/oakmoss formula here with deep copper juice.

Bottle shown compared to a later (late 70's through early 80's for 6oz, 4oz after that) bottle with simplified badging and straw-colored juice.

Original vintage Wild Country is rounder, smoother, richer, a tad muskier. The later one is drier, more aromatic and powdery. Both formulas are excellent and better than anything made in the 90's or later (brown cap and juice, 90's font sticker on front), as that was when Avon did a slight re-orchestration to make Wild Country more contemporary.

Below are the bottles by themselves.

    SOTN:

    Lenthéric - Repartée (1949)

Ad copy: “An engaging new fragrance. Witty, expansive, and lasting. As daring as a night in France.”

A rather half-hearted (or half-witted) attempt to reconcile the character of the fragrance with its name. Alexandra Star offers a more useful description: “Repartee was launched in 1938. It is a lovely peppery perfume with deep floral heart notes and a creamy musky base.”

The date is off by 11 years, but otherwise it’s a fair account. I don’t get nearly as much pepper as I do florals. Star’s pyramid for Repartée is:

Top: neroli, bergamot, peach, orange blossom
    Heart: rose, jasmine, cinnamon, carnation
    Base: sandalwood, musk, vanilla, civet

Rose and jasmine (of good quality) predominate to my nose. I await the drydown to assess the base, but it looks plausible if we assume the civet is a minor player, as this is hardly animalic. It reads feminine to me, and at once old-fashioned and youthful, but I’m enjoying it nonetheless for that. I’ll be switching to a masculine from the house for my next one.
