Default Icy Cold Fragrance That Resembles the Coldness of Winter

    Hi Basenoters!

Sometimes I get tired of the warm, sugary, comfortable fragrances suitable for winter, especially when they put me to sleep and I don't much things done, lol. I need something that can pep me up; a fragrance that actually reminds me of the cold, crisp, iciness of winter. To embrace the thrill of the chill!

The components I am looking for in a fragrance that resembles winter:

    1) Cold and Icy- like snow and icicles, which would LAST from the initial spray to the drydown. Maybe even include a metallic note and/or menthol note?

    2) Crisp and refreshing- no not for summer! Something that smells like the crisp winter air and cold water (creek, lake, or river).

    3) Maybe include a pine tree note that is not overpowering or cloying.

Notes I'm trying to avoid: cloying, comforting/cozy, creamy, flowery/perfumey, fruity, too soapy, sugary, too sweet.

PLEASE help me out! I've looked around for a bit, but would not want to continue searching without the help of you fellow Basenoters!

Comme des Garcons Zagorsk (cold snowy landscape with forest : hinoki, violet (metallic-ish)/iris, incense; good longevity, but not massive projection)
Bottega Veneta Bottega Veneta pour Homme EdT (piney, airy, versatile re weekend days / office, discreet and classy)
Penhaligon's Juniper Sling (zingy juniper opening; longevity not great, drydown so-so - but that opening is such a blast)
Hermes Eau de Gentiane Blanche (gentian, iris, incense - green/vegetal opening, drydown is smoother; unusual take on cologne, and not a blind buy)
ETA : Chanel No19 EdT (not the Poudre version, which is too sweet)
Epiphany to Candlemas rotation of incense, iris, leather, heliotrope, smoke, cold, green : CdG Black, Avignon, Zagorsk; Jacomo de Jacomo, GGA, Etro Gomma, Bottega Veneta pH EdT, Penhaligon's Juniper Sling; Infusion d'Iris EdP; Etro Heliotrope. Sampling Hermes Bel Ami, Hiris, Eau de Gentiane Blanche; LAVS, Cardinal, No19 Poudre, Papillon Angelique and Anubis.

The Comme des Garcons Zagorsk sounds good. I'll put that on my list to check out. Thank you!

I prefer a spray bottle over a splash or aftershave. Thank you though.

I might give Comme des Garcons Zagorsk a shot by ordering a sample first via luckyscent (since I can't find a sample elsewhere). Any other recommendations?

I thought about Zagorsk as well because of the pine note. However, it is a woody incense, so it could come off as warm-depending. In the style, I'm thinking about CDG2 man as well-which feels quite cold to me, because of the aldehydes and the vetiver.

Incidentally, at some point Chanel's advertising was claiming that No 5 was inspired by the cold air of the northern Russian tundra (apparently the perfumer had fought there during WWI). Not that I find it that way-though it's true that aldehydes give a certain freshness. But the truly cold Chanel is Cristalle (eau verte especially).

Well... not much point replying any more . I recommend most of the above - especially Zagorsk which for me is “winter” in a bottle. Sugi is another great “winter in a bottle” CdG scent - iris, menthol, incense and woods. Not sure I agree with Juniper Sling, which I associate with gin and tonic, and therefore Spring/Summer. Cristalle is another great “cold” Chanel classic.

I also agree with the recommendation for Gris Clair - cold lavender and incense. Another obvious one to try is Frederic Malle L’Eau d’Hiver (“Winter water”), which is great and definitely fits the bill, but has always reminded me more of Spring for some reason, perhaps because of the creaminess of the florals or the sweet anise. If you’re trying l’Eau d’Hiver, you should definitely also try Guerlain’s masterpiece Apres l’Ondee, which doubtless inspired it and which also reminds me of winter save for the underlying creaminess.

Another great “cold” floral is Prada l’Infusion d’Iris, or its more masculine Iris Cedre alternative. I get citrus, iris, incense and musk, and overall a cold but clean sensation.

Finally, perhaps the “coldest” scent I have is 28 La Pausa EDT; however, the EDP (which has replaced it) is apparently not so “cold”. 28 La Pausa is an orris root scent - I find orris root dominant scents typically share the earthy, rooty coldness of winter, so may be a good place to explore. I have never tried it, but I imagine Iris Silver Mist, the queen of orris scents, has this effect. Another one I have tried and would suggest is Iris Nazarena by Aedes de Venustas - iris, orris root and incense. Somewhat linear but very beautiful and certainly wintery.

It's only available from SIXTEEN92.COM. An artisinal perfume house, one my favorites. She sells direct only. She rotates her stock frequently and sells out too, but then brings them back. She releases a new set of perfumes and offers a sample set every quarter plus Halloween.

Also, be aware that many items take an appreciable amount of time to prepare. I ordered 2 fragrances on 12/9/21 and they still are not ready to ship. I’ve only received 1 email confirmation of the order, which gives you a link to check order status. There is a note at the top of the main page which states most orders ship within 28 days and there’s a note under their “processing times” page that states they’re currently processing orders placed from 11/25-12/10. Ironically, the fragrances I ordered showed in stock at the time of order. So I’m assuming it has simply taken them 49 days +/- to begin pulling inventory and packaging stuff processed from around the time I ordered. But I’m unsure as it wasn’t clear if the had to make it to order or if it was actually bottled and on a shelf.

Now let me say that all isn’t a gripe, as I went into Sixteen92 expecting not to receive my order for at least 1-2 months. But everyone should simply be aware of the commitment before they spend the money. Personally, I look very forward to getting an email stating that my order has shipped and then subsequently trying them out!
