    Question...

I'm hearing lots of references to "he" as relates to Maxaroma.com

I thought this was an online seller like Fragrancenet, etc.

Is this an individually owned website that's just like a really big eBay seller?
Between Covid and retirement I don't get out much. But when I do, I smell real good.

I was under that impression as well over the years buying from them. Either way service is excellent as is the selection doesn’t bother me either way.

I mean I know fragrances go through re-formulation but damn this isn't a shadow of what it used to be, it's a different fragrance all together. So sad as this current version is complete garbage; there's nothing special about it.

The only saving grace is a family member bought a bottle around the same time I did and he has about 1/3rd of his left. He doesn't wear it anymore and is sending it my way.

How the heck do you remember the smell from 20+ years ago?

I've had various versions from 1988 up to 2018 or 2019. They all clock as Fahrenheit on my radar, but I wonder if I had smelled them blind if I'd think they were totally different fragrances. A main thing I picked up is that the newer stuff has a more candied violet smell like Canel's violet flavor gum, which the vintage stuff maybe doesn't have in the 'candied' way. No idea if a reform occurred in the early/mid 90's but for whatever reason I seem to prefer the early/mid 90's (current is a 1992, I think?) to anything else - even including 1988 which I've had.. 2-4 bottles of. Not sure why!

Might be a bad sample. I have a bottle from 2019 and it is nuclear; strong lawn mower style gasoline smell that projects wildly and lasts for 10+ hours. I've never smelled the vintage so maybe ignorance is bliss but I have no desire to find a vintage because it is so damn good

Did you see a difference between the 1988 and the ones from the early/mid 90s? I recalled a few mentions of the 1990s being slightly weaker than the ones from the late 80s.

I bought what I believe was a 2020 bottle and was very disappointed with the performance. You might find my thread below interesting:

It's really a shame what LVMH did during 2020 - probably because of Covid?

I heard that they also made disinfectants - maybe they neglected or deliberately watered down the scent production because you smell less with masks when walking around outside and people only wear the scents for themselves at home?

I've had a 2020 bottle of Givenchy Gentlemen Only Absolute - that one was never a beastmode fragrance I know... but that 2020 bottle, you sprayed it on and after half an hour it was a faint skin scent. But no change of formulation code in comparison to my samples.

Dior Homme Intense and Dior Homme Parfum are also weaker than before 2020.

Update. Got my hands on a 2019 (9N02) bottle. Now, this is what I remember! No idea what that sample was all about but this one is pretty damn robust!

Thanks again for all the info.

My 2020 bottle lasts all day. No performance problems with it.

That was my mistake, and I apologize. I screwed up. I mixed up different Maxes.

    Awesome.

Years ago, I had a similar experience with Caron Pour Un Homme. I got a sample and hated it. Later, I was given another sample as part of a sample pack, and I rolled my eyes, thinking "This junk again" but I tried it anyway... and instantly I realized my first sample must have gone bad. Caron Pour Un Homme is great stuff. Part of the challenge of swapping samples is that you have to assume the integrity of the juice. Or, at the very least, you have to assume the person you got the sample from is knowledgeable enough to know if their sample was bad. It's the same when buying decants or used bottles. I bought an old bottle of Original Vetiver a while back, and I understood the risk, but luckily it paid off. I got fantastic juice, but you never know until it arrives.
