Strong and Natural Lasting Pine Scent

Sorry guys, I'm going to go on a rant here. I am so frustrated in my search for a strong, natural pine forward/dominant scent. There does not seem to be one. What are fragrance houses thinking?! Getting fed up and about to give up!

I am looking for a pine fragrance that is not offset by a sweet, powdery, or floral note or two. I don’t mind a bit of a cold aquatic smell (fresh water is fine, no sea/salt water). A bit of citrus (or unsweetened fruit is fine). But the pine note needs to be dominant and last throughout its wearing, even if it appears linear, so be it.

Keep in mind, so far these are the ones I have not been impressed with:

Pino Silvestre- synthentic pine mess. Cheap and cheap smelling.
Arso Profumum- beautiful pine scent with a bit of smokiness, but also has an unnecessary sickly sweet note that lingers on. Made me nauseous numerous times.
Norme- not pine enough; has too many distracting notes. Too dark with the molasses-like smell. I want sharp, bright, refreshing and exhilarating!
Serge Lutens Fille en Aguilles- a popular one. Unfortunately does not have enough pine and has a powdery smell to it- ugh!
Silver Mountain Water- a popular one as well with a nice inkiness (older batches), but too floral for me and the batch variations are too much trouble for me.

What made me chase after a good pine scent was when my wife bought some Glade air freshener called Pine Wonderland. WONDERFUL WONDERFUL scent!! The notes in Pine Wonderland are: Pine, Juniper, and Mistletoe. You read that right- pine, juniper, and mistletoe. Not too many notes and it got the dang job done!

I thought, THIS is how a pine fragrance should smell! Natural, uplifting, strong. Reminds me of winter in a bright, refreshing, and exhilarating way instead of in a calming, comforting, sugary, warm, etc…way.

Guys, come on. There has got to be something out there like this. Any help would be appreciated!

I have Boreal from Pineward Perfumes on my test list. Although I prefer a spray, I'm willing to try the parfum extrait. Hope it'll be worth it. Will order it tomorrow (payday lol).

I do think you'll need to re-calibrate your expectations if you want a scent which is completely devoid of sweetness, as pine itself does have a resinous-type of sweetness inherent in it. Plus, it tends to go famously well with other sweet resins, so you'll see them paired very often.

That said, I've heard good things about the following (having not tried them myself):

- Bosschiisssimo Hilde Soliani
- Forest by Rook
- Winter Green Dasein
- Hinoki Comme des Garcons
- Olympic Rainforest Olympic Orchids

Also, Sedona Sweet Grass by Providence Perfume Co. has a prominent pine note mixed with a grassiness that I find really wearable and interesting. Seconding the recommendation above for Pineward, though it seems you're already planning on sampling. If I were you, I would sample each of the Pineward perfumes, as they all focus on different elements of coniferous scents.

Agua Brava is great. Not sweet but certainly nothing reminding me of an air freshener either, so I guess you might find it dull and subdued (like many seem to do).

How about Zagorsk by Comme des Garcons? It's brighter than Agua Brava. I personally find Hinoki a bit too sweet.

Btw, I haven't been able to locate Zagorsk yet. I'm also wanting to try either Winter Dasein or Winter Green Dasein. Not sure which one yet since I don't know how different they are.

Bowling Green pine is the primary wood note in both of these
Bottega Veneta PH - this one has more non-pine wood mixed in than the first two but still has a nice pine note

Olympic Rainforest is a great wood scent, but I get more fir/cedar/conifer woods than pine from it....

Although just to add my two cents, if strong and long lasting is what you’re after, I hardly think Zagorsk will meet expectations. It smells great but the CdG Incense series are all fairly quiet and close to the skin for me.

I think Rocky Mountain High by DSH is a great one, feels cool and fresh like mountain breeze, there are some other notes like cannabis, clary sage and balsam fir, but I can pick up pine needles easily, and no sweetness.

Received the sample set just yesterday. Was blown away by how natural smelling the set was (that's the way it should be IMO!)

I received: Fanghorn, Murkwood, Boreal, Steading, Apple Tabac, and instead of Christmas Wine- I received Bindebole (of which I have no complaint!)

First of all, a big KUDOS to Nick! He sure hit it big time with this set and I was very impressed as how it does not seems to be a work of a "newbie". Nick...way to go!!!!!!


Fanghorn- was the one that was the most challenging to me. While I love his intention with Fanghorn and it was spot on, the wet smell soil and damp vegetation mix gave off a bit of a slight urine smell, which provided a bit of a challenge to me (more than I am willing to handle at this point).

Steading- Love the idea on this one! The honey and tobacco was strong and very alluring! There was some hay smell as well. Just wish the maple was a bit more pronounced. Overall, such a lovely scent.

Apple Tabac- this smells so delicious, I had to stop myself from drinking it! Lol. Had never smelled a more realistic apple smell. The bonus was the addictive tobacco note, tied up wonderfully by the rum note! Oh!!! Perfect combination of notes!! I can see myself buying a bottle of this lovely concoction, and this was not even my favorite of the set! I will list my favorite last- lol.

Murkwood- bold, incense-y, with nice hits of some black hemlock (love the hemlock, so unique and underrated!). I also enjoyed the splash of bitter myrhh to wrap it up. My wife didn't quite enjoy it as much as I did. Her loss, lol.

Boreal- no question about the mint. Nice use of it and I could detect some pine and cedar. I liked how the pine later wrapped itself around the cedar note. Through it all, the mint note was the most dominant, and ended up being too linear for my taste. I had thought of the possibility of buying a bottle of this, but the mint made it a bit too linear. Overrall, a nice, invigorating scent.

Bindebole- a nice surprise (an understatement)! This actually ended up being my favorite of the bunch. There are no complaints at all with this one. It's like a walk into a forest. Imagine the wind blowing the fresh green smell in your face, caressing it. You can feel your soul invigorate and you just want to bask in its woody glory with your eyes closed. I adore the smell of the forest ground; it's dirt, the needles, the natural grass...oh! I could also detect the smell of leaves and some heaps of moss as well and I just KNOW I'm in the forest and don't want to leave! Yes, it's all so primeval, and I love it!! Nick, if this is your newest creation, I can only imagine your future! KUDOS!!

THIS!!! You WILL find what you're looking for! I spent years searching for the perfect conifer fragrance and while there are many that are nice out there, Pineward Perfumes is the brand you are looking for...trust me! Check them out pronto!


I saw you'd ordered Winter Green from Dasein. You may really enjoy it, but it doesn't have much of a conifer presence at all in my opinion. More of a beach/suntan feel from the pomelo to me. Boreal from Pineward Perfume is what I was hoping Winter Green would be, but wasn't.

I just barely saw this thread and will throw some more conifer thoughts down when I have a few more minutes. It's a fun search to find amazing coniferous gems!
