Lightbulb Tom Ford not worth buying anymore ......

I recall the early days, more than 10 years ago, when Tom Ford came along with a range of bold compositions. Since then the brand has simply gone downhill. Not saying they have anything good anymore, but consider the red flags -

    • Top-loaded compositions, with almost always worse dry-downs (could go from good to ok, or great to good .....).
    • Reformulations and watering down the best ones, such as Tuscan Leather (watered down).
    • Many of the better scents discontinued for no reason (Sahara Noir, Italian Cypress, Moss Breches ....). Now it seems discontinuation is a strategy.
    • Launching relatively inexpensive versions of Private Blends in the Signature line (personally I do not care about this point at all, as I prefer cheaper, but some who paid a higher price initially could be annoyed).
    • Too many flankers to keep up with, most being trivial variations on another existing perfume.
    • This is speculative - but apparently there are differences between theMade in USA vs. Made in Switzerland versions of the same perfume. I wouldn't bet on that, but it is something I have read on the forums and elsewhere.

If you compare that to something like Chanel or Hermes, just too many red flags IMO. Tom Ford will occasionally release a good perfume, but that seems more by chance than design. And in that case, if you really like it, better to buy several bottles soon since it will be discontinued or reformulated. I think that discontinuation and reformulation drive sales in this day and age, and Tom Ford looks to capitalise on that instead of staying true to the customer.

    Thoughts?

Even though i dont have any TF, moves described above are the sad reality of the perfume business today.
Buy, re-sell, discontinue, hype, water down.
If artists were running the field, and not ruthless moneygrabbers, things would be different.
Another house that i find dropped in quality is Xerjoff.
Too many, too soon without offering anything particularly original.

Did the decline start when Lauder took over? That's my impression - not sure how accurate it is. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

I don't own much TF, so cannot say about reformulations. But their strategy seems to have been to toss several things out, often without proper development, and see what sells.
Back when they started, they were a novelty and one of the few houses to take perfumes seriously. Since then, niche/prive lines have boomed, and it's true that TF doesn't bring much to the table anymore.

Tom Ford Beauty has always been owned by Estee Lauder since its inception. There was never a buyout or takeover, contrary to popular belief.

That being said ... this house certainly jumped the shark years ago.

My loss of interest began with the discontinuation of Sahara Noir...

At this point, Tuscan Leather clones are just as good (if not better) than today’s TL...

After F’n Fabulous, I officially checked out... This both began and ended with my boredom of TF’s juvenilely named, overpriced dreck...

As Freewheeling noted, the only Ford’s worth owning are the handful of stars that were inexplicably discontinued.

Although I've tried many over the years, personally never felt any were worth buying.

I tend to lose interest in brands when they start to favour putting crowd-pleasing formulae into heavily marked-up bottles. One or two crowd-pleasers are fine (eg. Malle), but when the majority of the line smells like it should cost $80 instead of $300 (eg. TF, MFK), I really take issue with that.

That said, I do still like Noir de Noir, just won't pay for it.

At one time I had 8 bottles and now I have just 1. The original lineup from 2007 was good(Moss Breches, Japon Noir etc) but the formulations and subsequent releases got worse in the years after. Personally I'm done with that brand.

I’ve never regarded TF as a line of interest. There are a few scents I like: Noir Anthracite, Tobacco Oud, Plum Japonais (for the Mrs.); a few others I don’t. I might like a few of the rest, but I can’t get too excited about finding out.

I've never had much of an interest in the TF brand, although when the individual worked at YSL things were very different. Nothing ground-breaking or revolutionary to my nose, so I agree with the above sentiments.

As many of you have said, they have had some good releases - Sahara Noir, Italian Cypress - but all of them seem to have ended up as discontinued in no time at all. How is that meant to maintain my loyalty to them brand?

Ahh the salad days.....Sahara Noir, Italian Cypress, TF for Men and TF Extreme. Those 4 remain the only fumes I have from the collection.

Though the Private Blend line has had some great stuff, I am starting to realize I mostly only like TF's designer releases and his signature releases. Not even because of price point, I just think those releases are more interesting and appealing to me. Everything in the Noir line, especially Anthracite, TF for Men, TF Extreme, BDJ, OL, Metallique, Costa Azzura. And I know the last three mentioned were once PB but are now Sigs and I honestly prefer them that way.

I enjoy wearing or smelling most of the Tom Ford fragrances I own, both from private & signature lines.

I also tend to buy them when I find interesting deals (barely used, second hand bottles)... therefore I'm probably less concerned about the "what you pay vs what you get" thing.

Just curious; to which Tuscan Leather clones are you referring. I need to check 'em out. (Is Acqua Di Parma Leather considered a "clone"? Because it smells similar to TF TL, and it smells awesome.)

BTW, I hate the name F'in fabulous as well. Gratuitous use of profanity doesn't exactly draw me in to expensive grooming products.

    Two thoughts and a conclusion:

    1. If I had it to do over, I'd probably have pursued a big bottle or two of Italian Cypress, but not at today's silly prices.
    2. Other than a few samples of oud wood and tuscan leather, the only TF of any quantity I own is a 50ml decant of Tobacco Vanille. I consider TV a 'lark' and haven't worn it since the first of December... 2018.

Right or wrong, I've come to view TF as a modern house all about the use of THOSE BIG FAT AROMACHEMS and find more utility and enjoyment from old school vintages. That's fine... as a oft flannel-clad semi-retired male approaching 60, I'd say it's a fair bet I'm not their target anyway. I think they'll do just fine.

I've got a bit of a soft spot for TF, but I basically agree with all this. It was the first "niche" type brand I encountered on Sephora shelves circa 2014, and having only previously owned designer freshies, I was blown away making my way through the lineup. My first post on BN was trying to decide which TF bottle to buy. I ended up narrowing it down to Noir Anthracite, which is still a fav, but even though I like a lot of their scents, I haven't purchased them and probably wouldn't, at least at retail.

If TF completely overhauled their model and just shifted the whole Private Blend line to Signature, I would definitely wait patiently and then buy up a bunch of them when they got to discounters. But barring that kind of situation, my interest has waned now that I own the fragrances I like. And FWIW, nothing that has been released since my first BN post 2 years ago has appealed to me, it's all the older stuff.
“I have often observed that [scents] cause an alteration in me and work upon my spirits according to their several virtues; which makes me approve of what is said, that the use of incense and perfumes in churches, so ancient and so universally received in all nations and religions, was intended to cheer us, and to rouse and purify the senses, the better to fit us for contemplation” - Montaigne

I agree with the OP on every count. TF was my first love in semi-niche perfumery and I've owned almost everything he released up until Lost Cherry. While there have been some nice fragrances released the past few years (Beau de Jour and Fougere d'Argent come to mind) I just can't bring myself to get excited about anything he's putting out now. With price-points standing where they are I don't even bother sampling anymore. Having said all that, I still love and wear a handful of his scents on the regular and am happy I own them.

I think there are so many Tom Ford releases it's actually hard to gauge how successful or unsuccessful the line is or isn't. Few stay around long enough, with enough attention, to solidify as "classics" of one type or another.
