It's a stylized illustration of the Hand of Justice, a scepter created for the inauguration of Napoleon I in 1804:

It was based on the Scepter of Charlemagne.

    ScepterOfCharlemagne.jpg

The astute viewer may note that Charlemagne's scepter is of the right hand, while Napoleon's is of the left. This is because the artisan who made Napoleon's used a reverse gravure image of Charlemagne's scepter as a reference. Fortunately for the artisan, Napoleon decided justice could be meted out as easily by the left hand as the right.

I just learned that Elsa Peretti, the designer of my favorite modernist perfume bottle, died last month at age 80.

    HalstonZ14andI12.advert.jpg

A flaming youth of drug use and frolicking with the Andy Warhol/Studio 54 crowd did not prevent her from becoming a much-revered jewelry designer at Tiffany & Co.

From her New York Times obituary:

In 2012, there was talk of Ms. Peretti’s leaving Tiffany (and taking her designs with her). But just as the year was ending, the designer and the retailer signed a new 20-year agreement, which included a one-time payment of more than $47 million. The numbers varied from year to year, but Peretti merchandise sometimes represented 10 percent or more of Tiffany’s sales.

    Chanel No 5 EDC.jpg

Another day of No. 5 EDC. I tried one spray of current EDP to compare. Yes, it's beautiful, but in a rather superficial way, the soul seems to have been ripped out. The EDC on the other hand captures an interplay of rather toned-down florals and a marvellously animalic, fuzzy warm base, with a measured burst of citruses and aldehydes.

Oh la, Jean-St. You had my interest at freshly-cut wood, and I was reaching for the bottle at urinous animalic.

Givenchy Gentleman is also known for having patchouli. You can check out Alan's thread from when he got a bottle:

No such thing as smelling correctly or incorrectly - just be yourself and say what you think you smell. It's only scented water after all.

I know that scent smelling is a totally subjective thing. But if some more people than me do smell the way I smell, I'm supposed to think that I'm getting what is inside the scent correctly. But again, you are totally right: I just can tell what I smell for myself.
