It's a stylized illustration of the Hand of Justice, a scepter created for the inauguration of Napoleon I in 1804:

It was based on the Scepter of Charlemagne.

    Attachment 151152

The astute viewer may note that Charlemagne's scepter is of the right hand, while Napoleon's is of the left. This is because the artisan who made Napoleon's used a reverse gravure image of Charlemagne's scepter as a reference. Fortunately for the artisan, Napoleon decided justice could be meted out as easily by the left hand as the right.

Yes, it's a beautiful scent. Each time I wear it my wife blames me for not wearing it more often because she thinks it's a masterpiece in my collection !

My best ever lucky purchase from eBay - I was attempting to buy Givenchy "III", and instead got 100ml of the silver wrapped Givenchy Gentleman as part of 3 other bottles (including a full 1980s Halston 1-12 and a Valentino V) - all for the princely sum of £10.

I keep forgetting that this thread is being restarted periodically now, so it falls off my Subscriptions!

    Lately I have worn:

    -Chanel 19 EDT
    -Lancome Sagamore
    -Monsieur Rochas
    -Capucci Yendi
    -Balmain Vent Vert
    -Homme de Gres
    -Patou 1000

A small belated tribute to Elsa Peretti today:

Z-14 (1976) by Vincent Marcello for Halston

What a great year 1976 was. Z-14 came out and Parliament Funkadelic recorded "Tear the Roof Off the Sucker".

LOL! No, I know the history of one artifact—that is, I know one “arty fact.”

That’s how it starts, though. I was curious about Crown Perfumery because I liked Clive Christian 1872, and 500+ bottles later, here I am. If I end up with a doctorate in French history, it will be Cook.bot’s fault for asking about that friggin’ hand.

All I know is I would like a mini version of that scepter, so I can walk into a coffee shop and imperiously indicate my choice of muffin with it.

Nettie Rosenstein - Mlle. Ghe (1965)

Ad copy from 1965: "Introducing Mlle. Ghe—a provocative new scent to delight the woman who likes adventure in fragrances."
"New subtly exciting fragrance…gentle sophistication for the discerning woman."
"Born to beguile. Nettie Rosenstein's Mlle. Ghe. Fragrance so feminine and flirty. Just a dab on your pulse makes his beat a little faster."

The Non-Blonde: "Mlle Ghe is a dirty white floral. Jasmine, civet and a filthy musk, quite indolic. There may be some aged tuberose in there. It's of the same school of thought that brought us Ferme tes Yeux."

I believe grayspoole has this, as well.

Without an awful lot left in the way of top notes, I'm not assaulted by indolic jasmine, and instead get mostly a warm, musky-mossy-woody base. It's still good, if a bit like looking at an elderly woman and discerning what a stunner she must have been in her prime.
