Have you ever blind-bought a fragrance just because the ad copy and fragrance branding is telling a story that appeals to you?

No, this hobby is already expensive enough as it can be
However, I am sensitive to packaging. I might tend to sample more from one random good looking bottle than the other, it takes effort to overlook completely packaging

Not yet. If it came across as more factual and less needy, that could be of interest.

No - in fact I pay little mind to the advertising. Now the opinions of Basenoters are a whole other story.

Once that I can recall. Not sure if it counts as “ad” copy, but it was the write up on Rogue Perfumery’s website a couple of years back. I read a review, went to the site, and made a blind-buy on the spot. I’m glad I did. The whole non-IFRA compliant spiel appealed to me.

Nice idea for a thread! I would have been guilty of this back in my younger days, however, I have never blind bought based on the ads. I would admit that, at the high school or college age, the ad campaign could have played a part in my decision making while at the old Lazarus or L.S. Ayres stores.

Have never blind-bought anything based on an ad, but I've had ads provide a well-timed nudge to revive an interest in something. And it's only for perfumes I have experienced; if an ad doesn't stir any olfactory memories, then they're pretty meaningless to me.

Hard to claim that I've never been influenced by the marketing in some way, but can't say I've ever been consciously swayed by the ad copy in the way you describe.

(On the contrary I have to admit I often find the marketing rather off-putting, lame and and at times downright cringeworthy )

I'm afraid I have. Also, I reckon I'll fall into that rabbit hole again in future. BTW: does anyone have a spare bottle of Smith&Wesson aftershave laying around

No, but I wish ad copy were that compelling. (Maybe if ClaireV wrote all of it.)

Not JUST because of it but... Sex Appeal partly for its refreshingly anti-snobby "fragrance branding".

The only advertising that has ever gotten me to buy a fragrance is the commercial for Egoiste, but I didn't blind buy it.

    Sort of...

Some years ago, before I was into fragrances, I stopped by the fragrance counter at Nieman Marcus to smell a fragrance that I had seen an ad for. The fragrance, whose name I will omit, is now a popular yet stereotypical men's designer fragrance, however at that time it was new release.
At the counter I asked the SA if they had that fragrance available for testing, she said they did and directed me to the tester. Before I was even able to smell the fragrance the SA began asking me if was familiar with any other fragrances, notes, houses etc. After talking for a few minutes she began to steer me towards some of the more niche and unique fragrances, I was quickly hooked.
I didn't purchase any fragrances that day, I didn't even smell the fragrance I had initially come into to test (I wouldn't smell it for another 2 years) but my interest in smelly things had been piqued and that day my journey into fragrance began.

Wherever you are Doris, thank you.
If you can smell me you're too close.

That Enjoli link directed me to the SNL skit on Red Flag perfume. That's good writing!

For transparency, this was inspired by a blind buy of my own:

    Introducing our new Havana Cologne.

This intoxicating fragrance has been formulated to evoke the swaying and rustling of Cuba’s one hundred different species of palm trees.

Of course, it wasn't *just* the ad copy that inspired the blind buy, it was also my general admiration for Trumper as a house and its standard of quality. But it was the image of palms swaying that convinced me to pull the trigger...

Both the Safari for Men and Polo ads drew me in. Pretty sure I still tried them before buying but I was already halfway there based on the ads...

CdG’s more out there frags like Odeur 71, Tar or Radish Vetiver have note pyramids that just dare me to blind buy them and find out if they really live up to the hype. They’re always less weird and more wearable than I’d imagine, which isn’t all that much of a bad thing.

I’m such a sucker for great storytelling and kickass ads. I’m surprised blind buys didn’t happen as often as I thought it would. Most notable was Areej Le Doré’s 5th collection, especially War & Peace and Antiquity. Ancient resins and well-aged oils in fragrances? Sign me up!

    Not that I can recall.

The ads in modern magazines all looked the same to me. Big name actors face, then a small picture of the fragrance bottle somewhere. Johnny Depp, Chris Evans, it doesn't matter. That doesn't convince me to buy a fragrance because they all feel too generic and cookie-cutter.

The magazine ads for classic scents are the ones that look more interesting and are attempting to tell more a story.

The Polo one that was posted plays that up well. I was already a fan of the scent, the bottle presentation, and its reputation as an "old money" scent. But the old school ads with the polo players coming out the bottle further sold me the idea of the fragrance.
