I‘m super happy that Je suis un Homme & African Leather got mentioned — two really underrated gems imo.

My list is not my top 5 nor what might be the top 5 most important frangrances or something, just 5 scents that I think of as must haves for perfume lovers, for different reasons:
    Nicolai — New York Intense
    Puredistance — M
Serge Lutens — Iris Silver Mist
Tauer — L‘Air du Désert Marocain
    Guerlain — Tonka Imperiale

    There are so many more...

These were the first five that really bowled me over in my fragrance journey and continue to be favorites today (I’m on my second/third bottle of all these at this point):

    Terre d’Hermes
    Encre Noire
    Royal Oud
    Fahrenheit
    Guerlain Homme L’Eau Boisee

I appreciate all the suggestions. There are a few repeats, so that's probably where I'll start.

Anyone know where to get a sample of Green Irish Tweed??

    For ME:
Kouros, Caron Pour un Homme, Jicky, Acqua di Parma Colonia, Eau Sauvage is a solid 5.

Recommended for others regardless of age:
Eau Sauvage, Acqua di Gio Profumo, Fahrenheit, Caron Pour un Homme, Terre d'Hermes EdT (or Parfum) are solid.

Try the decants/splits forum - I believe there’s a few people offering GIT there currently.

I think that's the worst way to go because it's generic. Instead, if I were you, I'd be asking myself a question like this:

What are the five situations in my life I'd want different fragrances for? Find scents that suit your style for those situations. As an example, here are mine with my picks for my life and my style:

A Scent For Casual Wear: Penhaligon's, Castile

A Scent For Formal Wear: Histoires De Parfums, 1725 Casanova

A Scent For Work: Creed, Royal Oud

A Scent For Really Hot Weather: Chanel Les Exclusifs, Eau De Cologne

A Scent For Really Cold Weather: Phaedon, Tabac Rouge
Current Favorites (in no particular order)
    Castile
    Boy Chanel
    Endymion
    Royal Oud
    Rose 31
    Curve
    1725 Casanova
    Tabac Rouge
    Reflection Man
    Green Irish Tweed
    Tom Ford Extreme
    Interlude Man
    Chanel Eau De Cologne
    Aqua Universalis
    Terre d'Hermes Parfum
    Pomelo Paradis
    Amouage Silver Man
    Hanae Mori H.M. EDT

It does indeed sometimes remind me of putting up hay, and other times the soapy aspects come through. One day it's just so much lavender, and another the smoky vetiver takes hold. It's truly a gem.
I would say that Open is a spectacularly good fragrance 'for the price' but I just think it's brilliant regardless of what it costs.

If I had to choose 5 (although it will change!)

    Floris Elite
    Aramis Havana
    Eau Sauvage Parfum
    AdP Leather
    Masculin Pluriel

Although I'm constantly buying samples/decants to get my nose around as much as I can!

Agree with Chanel Cuir de Russie, Mitsouko, and Sous Le Vent.

Vol de Nuit and No 19 would be good.
