    Could you please explain about the switch from profile picture to avatar. What exactly happens to our current profile picture? Where do we get an appropriate avatar? What qualifies as an avatar?

    That sounds like a really useful feature, which I'd love because there are 8 to 10 critics whose reviews are primary to me when researching a scent. But it also sounds like it would be difficult to code into the site.

    The only way I could see it happening is if, once you have pulled up all of a user's reviews, there was a "search" button where you could enter the name of a particular scent, the way the "search thread" and "search forum" buttons now work.

    My only thoughts on it are to maintain the style as similar as you can, and keep the signature green color of the site/forums. =)

    Basenotes was a secret society back in 1970, it didn't come out of hiding until 30 years later.

    All this does is set up for heckling and infighting, similar to the horror show that is Fragrantica reviews, where people just take shots at each other instead of reviewing the fragrance.

    Plus, if you disagree or question someone's assessment of a fragrance, that's the kind of thing you should be doing in private anyway, since it doesn't really matter nor is relevant/helpful to anyone else reading that same review.

    This is why question and answer threads or other user review sites outside the fragrance community only let you upvote or downvote an answer.

    Especially with things that have results varying by individual like performance of a fragrance. Some people find 4 sprays too much, others lay down 20 and complain they still can't smell anything. Same with hearing, tasting, etc.

    Anything else like a criticism or grievance about a review or reviewer is needless drama typically against code of conduct on most sites that host public user reviews, perfume-related or not.

    I'm pretty sure there are three choices.
    Thumbs up, in the middle, and a thumbs down.
    I think the reviews here on basenotes are fair.
    There isn't that one person that leaves a review, and a percentage of people just follow it.
    I think it's that some people want to get their stats up or something,
    meaning, I don't think that they've actually sampled the fragrance that they are commenting on.
    I see something similar to the movie reviews on YouTube.
    Not the review itself, but the comments on the review.
    You can tell that they haven't seen the movie, just by the question you ask them.
    Of course, that differs from the actual review on perfumes, but I think the comparison is similar enough.
    That's why I like basenotes much more than any of the other sites and will continue to support it.

    That's why I do like the system we have here. I do agree that commenting on someone's review would be a bad idea.

    Perhaps members that have a LOT of reviews, that don't fit on a page can have an index of sorts

    The Avatar is the picture that sits next to your posts. The profile pic is the pic you can only see in your profile.

    In your case, this is your Profile Pic:

    And this ones your avatar

    On the new site, it just uses Avatars, so you'll just have the second pic next to all your posts

    WHen we converted from Yabb 1.x to Yabb 2.0 there was an error which meant some users had a join date of '0', which computers interpret as Jan 1st 1970 - I'm planning on doing a sweep of these people and seeing if I can replace this with a more accurate join date, based on their first post.

    Yep, still working on it. It's just me doing it, so it will be ready when it's ready. Hoping to have a working beta of the whole thing in about a month, which anyone that wants to can play with, and we'll go live when it's done.

    There will likely be a few things missing once we move to the new site - BUT - all the important things will be there and present on day one. As an example

    Important things
    * forums
    * reviews
    * wardrobe
    * sotd
    * perfume directory

    Less important things
    * conversion of BN Awards
    * perfume event listings
