I'm no fan of marines, but the one I admire (though do not wear) is Lys Mediterranee.

    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

It's nice, but Sydney Rock Pool shares some of its DNA and is nicer overall.

I always big up Fleurs de Sel by Miller Harris with this question

The problem I find with 'marines' is they invariably contain calone, which I hate

Also adding Hugh Parsons Blue-though not so much a marine, as much as fresh, sharp scent mostly dominated by icy juniper notes yet also with some marginal hints of seaweed and airy/aquatic tones

For me, it is without question Hermes Epice Marine.
"Artists talk a lot about freedom. So, recalling the expression "free as a bird," Morton Feldman went to a park one day and spent some time watching our feathered friends. When he came back, he said, "You know? They're not free: they're fighting over bits of food."

Oud minerale gives me the impression of a damp cave or the like rather than a beach. In that style, I prefer the even starker Histoires de Parfums Petroleum (which is based on the same idea, oud reconstruction + marine).

    Petroleum is genius.
FYI: I spray all fragrances on clothing, never on skin.
