Default Basenotes posts from 2003 - 2005 now online

A couple of years ago, I made available the posts from the days when the Basenotes forum was hosted on a Yahoo email list. (read more about that here).

After we left Yahoo in 2003, we moved to a self-hosted message board called YaBB, which we had previously used to host an early version of the Basenotes Market place. Here is how the forums looked back then.

After we left the Yahoo Groups, our previous moderator Ronbo wasn't able to help as much so we added a new moderator, CoL, who was later joined by Paul_G.

Not long after we moved to YaBB 2, and also added women's fragrances to the site. And we added two more mods - Ladylonestar and Tigrushka

Here's what the site looked like after moving to YaBB 2

After we moved to vBulletin in 2005, some of the earlier threads were lost due to the import process.

As we are moving to a new forum system soon, I wanted to make sure as many as the threads as possible from the past are retained, so the missing 2003-2005 threads are now in the forum.

If you look at them, bear in mind a few things:

    • There is a mix of fragrance, offtopic and marketplace stuff all in the same place
    • There may be threads that would be against our current code of conduct now
    • Some links people have added - and all Polls, appear to be missing, so a few things are lacking context (such as this thread here where there should have been a poll as to whether you like olives or not)

Some threads that might be of interest:

Thanks, Grant. I like ancient stuff.

Peeked at the Strongest Creed thread. I love that SixCats has stuck to his distinctive posting style for ~20 years. It looks like it could have been posted yesterday. He’s a gem!

    How interesting!
Remember that while it is perfectly acceptable to criticize the content of a post - criticizing the poster is not.
Mean spirited, nasty, snide, sarcastic, hateful, and rude individuals on Basenotes don't warrant or deserve my or other Basenoters' acknowledgement or respect.

There were a number of threads that discussions of some very rare Creeds that I want those contributors from 2003 more about.

I'm curious of who else was a mod in those early years of BN's existence.

    What fun! Thanks, Grant!

Any change of bringing back the Cranky fragrance suggestor - specifically, an automated version where people could type their suggestions into a form and not have to bother you with them?

I’ve updated the original post to provide this info as well as some additional images.

it does kind of exist. If you go to a page on the directory and scroll down, there’s a bit which says: members who like this fragrance also like… - and that’s essentially a beefed up version of Cranky!

There used to be a feature where the directory would show who wanted a fragrance or wanted to swap one. Could this be reinstated? It was very helpful for many of us.
