    Default Rose + Oud Fragrances

I know that Rose & Oud is a popular and classic fragrance combination. I currently only own Montale Black Aoud, and while it scratched my itch for the combination I would like to possibly buy another that might compliment it in my collection.

I know I have heard people describe Montale Black Aoud as a "dark" Rose+Oud combo, what would be some frags that have a different vibe I should check out? Thanks :]

I will point out there are different "sides" of rose. So different fragrances featuring "rose" as the co-note or side note can be very different.

Another option is you could simply just go to the DIY section of this forum and make a separate "rose" spray to apply, and layer that on the oud.
The four main notes that go into rose are (1) beta damascone (jam-like, most beautiful part of rose, potent in very small amounts), (2) rose oxide (green, musky, more like white rose, or camellia, a little reminiscent of geranium flower with an earthy undertone), (3) geraniol (scratchy, more like red rose, the smell of "rose geranium" pelargonium, reminiscent of morning dew), and (4) lastly phenylethyl alcohol (the smell of scented disinfectant wipes, not unpleasant, slightly sharp but with a rose-like sweetness, more like a wilted rose).

Apologies if this type of post might not be appropriate in this section of the forum.

I'd look for Oud Silk Mood (Kurkdjian), which is an incredibly well "rounded" scent. For me that was love at first whiff. Les Sables Roses (Louis Vuitton) is at least as good, but a little spicier. Rose Oud (Parmfums Nicolai) is a fairly direct but light rose/oud combination, Rose Exaltante (Mizensir) is a brighter interpretation than that, and Rose Anonyme (Atelier Cologne) is a bit more muffled.

    Both good choices...

THE NIGHT is a rough barnyard oud...but is one heck of a scent. Out of my league, but I got a decent sample to wear. I'm personally a little put off by the "barnyard."

THIRTY THREE is stunningly good for sure. But it may be a bit close- not identical -- to BLACK AOUD.
I don't get out much. But when I do, I smell real good.

All of these are worth exploring, I'd also try to get my hands on some Oud/Rose combos done by middle eastern houses, perfumes or attars.

Cartier Oud & Rose and Mancera Black Line might be nice variations for you to look at.

However, exercise caution with experimenting with oud as we have had a decade where the craze has come and gone and never really delivered on its promise. In many cases the great oud fragrances seem to smell great despite the oud not because of the oud.

Since you're in Houston, here's a cheapie that punches above its weight: Varvatos Oud.

If you can find a store that sells it, give it a sniff. It can be found online for around $40 and it's surprisingly good - but it's not a heavy scent nor is it heady. It's more of a dressed up mass appeal kind of scent without being a common smell. The drydown actually reminds me more of Murdock Black Tea than a traditional heavy rose/oud. I don't recommend blind buying it though. Then again, I never recommend blind buying.

By the way... Atelier Cologne's Rose Anonyme was mentioned above. That's a really interesting scent. I can't figure out if I love it or hate it, but it's definitely compelling. You might be able to give it a sniff & even pick up a sample at Sephora.

I don't own an oud & rose combo fragrance, but if I were in the market for it, it would be either MFK's Satin Mood / Satin Mood Extrait, or Ex Idolo's Thirty Three.

That being said, if you want something on a budget and with leather being another leading note, you can't go wrong with Attar Al Ghutra by Swiss Arabian. I can highly recommend it.

Another vote for Malle's the Night. Ombre Nomade is great too. The price is quite high on both of those. If you check out Sultan Pasha, he has several attars that could fit the bill (Juriah being the most standard "Rose/Oud" combo IMO) with better ingredients and composition than both of those and 1ml options that make them affordable in comparison. 1ml goes a long way with SPA's.

Taif Al Emarate UAE Black (also called UAE Oud.) Dark, animalic, yet smooth. Not your ordinary rose/oud combo by any means. It's been compared favorably to the mega-expensive Nebulous Boadicea the Victorious.

Arabian Oud Majestic Special Oud is like a niche, refined version of Black Oud.

Arabian Oud Royal Oud is expensive, but one of the best.

I havent tried Ombre Nomade or The Night, but of what i have Dior Oud Ispahan does a good job of dirtying up the fake oud a bit with some leather to give sort of an ode to oud. Oud Palao is similar. Santal Royale reads as a rose oud caramel to me, Oud Satin Mood is in the clean spicy zingy rose. Spice Must Flow was similar to Santal Royale. Oudh Infini is my favorite, though it has a bitter almost green rose that takes a back seat to a strong oud opening.
    I smell.

I thought it might be too feminine as well until I smelled it on a female friend of mine. It smelled amazingly sexy on her, but it didn't smell feminine, nor did it smell masculine. It smelled perfectly unisex, but not in a middle of the road kind of way. It smelled like something anybody could wear so long as the situation was right. Noir De Noir isn't versatile in my opinion. It's the sort of scent you wear on a cool (or better yet, cold) night out. I had to smell this one on somebody else before I truly understood it. I only own a decant, but I'm glad I have some.

Noir De Noir is big, bold, deep, and mysterious - with an emphasis on being mysterious. It's excellent.
